Preventing trailer mispulls with real-time trailer visibility

What a trailer mispull costs you

A trailer mispull is when a tractor leaves the yard with the wrong trailer behind it. The driver usually finds out hours into the run. By then the correct load is still sitting at the yard while the wrong one burns fuel in the wrong direction.

The costs add up fast: a missed delivery window, a rerouted day, dock time lost at both ends, and an afternoon of paperwork explaining what went wrong. If the load is temperature-sensitive or time-critical, one wrong pull can mean the whole shipment is written off. There is also the quieter cost, a customer who planned their operation around your delivery slot and now has to replan around your mistake.

Why mispulls keep happening

Trailers move constantly, and paper-based tracking cannot keep up with that movement. Two failure patterns dominate.

  • The paper says one thing, the trailer holds another. A driver pulls the trailer assigned on the yard sheet, and only later does anyone realise it was loaded with different freight.
  • Transcription errors at dispatch. A mistyped trailer number in the dispatch system means the correct trailer is never the one that gets pulled.

Both are innocent mistakes made under departure-window pressure, which is why process fixes alone tend to plateau.

Why manual fixes fall short

Better yard check-ins, stricter pre-trip documentation and driver training all help, but each one depends on a human catching a discrepancy at the moment of departure, the busiest minute of a driver's shift. A driver who has pulled the same type of load dozens of times will glance at a number and move on. Dispatcher double-checks add overhead without adding real-time verification, and paper logs are only reconciled after the fact, long after the trailer is on the highway.

The core problem is that manual processes are reactive. Everything is discovered downstream, after the cost has already been incurred.

Real-time trailer visibility makes mispulls preventable

Live tracking of every trailer, whether it is in the yard, in transit, or parked at a customer site, turns trailer management from a guessing game into a checkable fact. On RAAD, the Track module shows each trailer's location and status on one map, so dispatchers can confirm a pairing before the tractor rolls out, not hours later.

Add Guard e-locks and you also know whether a trailer has been opened when it should not have been, which is useful when the wrong trailer has been sitting loaded for days.

Use the same visibility to rightsize your trailer fleet

Mispull prevention is the urgent reason for trailer visibility, but the same data answers a slower question: do you have enough trailers, and are the ones you own being used? Dormant trailers sitting at customer sites are capital doing nothing. Utilisation reporting built from trip and stop history shows which assets are idle, which are earning, and whether you need to buy more or simply dispatch better with what you have.

Common questions

Can visibility tools stop every mispull?

No system stops every human error, but real-time pairing checks catch the majority before departure, when they are cheapest to fix. The residual errors are found in minutes rather than hours.

Does this require replacing our existing trackers?

Not with RAAD. RAAD takes over the hardware you already run rather than forcing a rip-and-replace, so existing trailer and tractor trackers feed the same console.

What about the compliance side?

An accurate, automated trailer record also keeps your logs clean. In the US, trailer records feed DOT compliance scores, and inaccurate logs invite roadside inspections. Even outside regulated markets, a trustworthy record of what pulled what is worth having.
